Advanced motor control

What’s up everyone. Josh Kingsley here, your host for All Things Control by Eaton.

In our second installment of What’s in the Trailer, we are delving into advanced motor control solutions for applications that require more sophisticated control. This includes applications that are turned on and off a lot or benefit from integrating multiple devices.

Two advanced motor control configurations

In this section of the trailer there are two configurations of advanced motor control. What’s common across the two are Eaton’s FAZ miniature circuit breakers. These allow you to reset your system rather than changing a fuse, saving you time and money. We’ve also included Eaton’s 22mm pilot devices for starting and stopping the system. This includes jog and E-stop pushbuttons, typically used for motors in a manufacturing process or on a machine where one may have a need to stop the system reliably.

The first configuration also features an Eaton safety relay and the SMC solid-state electronic motor starter. This helps manage inrush current, making the contactor last 10 times longer than a standard contactor for an application like an indexing table for example.

The second configuration also features Eaton’s XT IEC combination motor controller with an XT IEC solid-state manual motor protector in front of the contactor. The manual motor protector includes both motor branch short circuit protection and motor overload protection in one device. This reduces footprint size and cost. The solid-state motor protector provides selectable trip class functionality, which controls the time that it takes to trip the device in an overload condition.
