The 2023 edition of NFPA 70B has transitioned from a “recommended practice” to a “standard” and contains mandatory language for the development, implementation and operation of an EMP. The new standard impacts electrical infrastructure across installed in industrial plants, institutional and commercial buildings, and multifamily residential complexes.

Part of the 2023 NFPA 70B updates is requiring an EMP for your facility. An EMP is a managed program of inspecting, testing, monitoring, analyzing, and servicing electrical equipment with a purpose of maintaining safe operations. NFPA 70B states that one’s electrical maintenance plan shall include the following:
In the absence of manufacturer’s testing guidelines, NFPA 70B provides a table that lists the requirements of maintenance for electrical equipment. Chapters 11 through 38 provide guidance on the periodic maintenance procedures for all equipment which include visual inspections, cleaning, lubrication (if appliable), mechanical servicing, and electrical testing.
NFPA 70B lists the types of tests required for electrical equipment but also highlights a frequency of maintenance. When manufacturer’s recommendations are not provided, maintenance shall be performed at the intervals specified in the new standard. The condition of the equipment will help determine the frequency at which it shall be maintained.

Electrical equipment requires systematic maintenance to ensure maximum performance and in-service life. A periodic electrical maintenance program is essential for minimizing potential catastrophic property damage, personal injury risk, unscheduled downtime and total operating costs. Periodic maintenance, including testing, inspection, adjustment and repair should be performed on both protective devices and electrical assemblies.
Maintenance for certain equipment is required across various workplace health and safety codes and standards, including National Electrical Code, NFPA 70B, NFPA 70E, NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities Code, and NFPA 110 Standard for Emergency and Standby Power Systems. The requirement refers to electrical equipment that supplies loads vital for life safety, public welfare, and national security.
