Eaton UPS and battery safety

UPSs protect and power the equipment that runs essential business systems, industrial and medical processes, and communications networks. Everyone should be aware of the risk that these vital pieces of equipment possess along with other power infrastructure equipment.

Safety is an embedded value at Eaton. Be assured that while Eaton employees are working at a customer facility or site, they will be following Eaton and industry best practices for protecting equipment and maintaining a safe and hazard-free environment.

UPS and battery safety services offered

Following industry guidelines, a customer engineer may conduct the following preventive maintenance activities. Beyond this sample, IEEE Std 450-2010 outlines comprehensive guidelines for monthly, quarterly and annual maintenance.
UPS services	Measure and record input AC voltages and currents on all three phases Measure and record delta voltage at the static switch Measure and record rectifier output DC voltage and adjust if needed Measure and record AC voltages and currents on all three phases Test static switch for “no break” transfer Test all alarms Measure and record all DC power supply voltages and adjust if needed Test all indicator lamps Inspect all ground connections and wire insulation Vacuum interior Inspect air filters and replace if needed Inspect input and output conductors and tighten to manufacturers’ specifications Document each inspection with actions taken or recommendations made
Battery services	Check appearance, safety, cleanliness and temperature of battery room Check and repair as needed: Ventilation equipment is deployed per specifications Corrosion on battery terminals Battery cell leaks or cracks Battery cables Integrity of rack mounting Inspect charger and inverter Grounds, connections, wire insulation and electrical safety Test each battery with a 100-ampere load applied for 10 seconds Re-torque cell connections and micro-ohm to manufacturer specifications Measure and record: Cell voltage and specific gravity of each battery cell Internal impedance of all cells to manufacturer specifications Calibrate to manufacturer specifications: Ammeters and voltmeters Charger DC output current, float and equalize voltage Inverter AC output current, float and equalize voltage Timers Alarm relays Indicator lamps

Training and safety protocols

Field technicians receive classroom style training that includes standards review (OSHA, NFPA 70E, ANSI, etc.), group case studies, demonstrations, and competency observation and testing.

EHS Team

Eaton’s Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) team receives unequivocal management support in promoting safety, even when it costs Eaton more and/or exceeds industry standards.
The EHS team works with the engineers who design the UPSs to drive safety further upstream in the power chain. For example, rather than a field technician donning protective gear to do voltage readings, they can now be taken remotely, with no risk to the engineer.
Eaton constantly strives to design more elements to reduce exposure and improve safety—as well as making UPSs easier and faster to service.
