Better energy efficiency makes your businesses more successful

In almost all industrialised countries, energy efficiency is now a key topic of interest for governments. Laws and regulations have been passed that mandate carbon-footprint and energy-consumption reductions in almost all areas of life. In many countries, clear targets have been defined and are being enforced by rules or additional energy taxes. Whilst this poses a challenge for industry, it simultaneously presents a huge opportunity, as sustainably engineered products are already seeing higher growth than less energy-efficient alternatives.

Energy usage statistics of electric motors

In industrial production, electric motors account for two-thirds of overall energy costs, and their energy consumption represents more than 95 % of lifetime costs. These two numbers alone demonstrate the potential of electric motors and the control devices in their vicinity for improving energy efficiency. The EU ErP directive has mapped a path towards more sustainable industrial production.

The third stage of the Energy-related Product (ErP) Directive provides clear guidelines for the use of IE2, IE3 and IE4 motors. It also places new requirements on the use of motor starters and drives from 0 kW to 375 kW. For detailed information, download our white paper.

Energy-efficient motors - a new challenge for switchgear

Energy-efficient motors are not only characterised by significantly improved efficiency, but also by lower internal resistance. As a result, their inrush currents can reach magnitudes of 14 x IN. This means that the contact mechanisms in contactors can wear out very quickly and that nuisance tripping of the motor-protective devices may become a problem.
