Stuart at the heart of his community

Stuart is a 2021 Stover Award winner in volunteerism from the Aerospace division, for his many volunteer actions with the Wimborne Minster fire service, the front-line ambulance service as well as his community outreach work.

Eaton Director by day, fire & ambulance volunteer by night

Stuart Tucker is the Product Support & Technical Services Manager for the Eaton Aerospace Group and has been working for Eaton for over 33 years. But since 1989, Stuart has had another vocation – helping his community through outreach, fundraising and volunteer firefighting – and most recently, as a front-line ambulance aid.
Fighting fires and tending to medical emergencies

Stuart grew up in the small town of Wimborne Minster in Dorset, and just like his grandfather and father before him, became a volunteer firefighter as soon as he turned 18. Over the years, Stuart worked his way up the ladder to Station Commander at Wimborne and now oversees over 400 emergency calls a year. He’s part of a group of on-call firefighters who volunteer for the service in their spare time – when they’re not busy working their full-time jobs.

Since the start of the COVID pandemic, Stuart has also volunteered for the front-line ambulance service on the weekends. He was able to carry over his medical training as a firefighter to ambulance rescue and tends to all sorts of emergencies – from COVID cases to cardiac arrests, accidents and mental health patients.

Fundraising
Alongside his volunteer work, Stuart has also been fundraising since he was 14 – in the form of social and sporting events such as marathons, bingo nights, charity walks and car washes. He works to raise financial support for two local charities: fire charity, in support of widows and orphans of firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty, and LEAF, which funds Leukemia research and education.
Finding the right balance

Stuart works at Eaton, is on-call during the nights as a firefighter, and then works one or two shifts over the weekend with the ambulance service. In total, he spends about 7’000 hours a year volunteering. Next to this, Stuart is also finishing off his MBA at the University of Chichester, which is a 3-year program. So, it’s no secret that with so many responsibilities, finding the right balance is key.

To Stuart, it’s not about a work-life balance, it’s about a ‘life-balance’: “When I go to work, I don’t forget about my family life. And when I’m doing my other activities I don’t forget about work. It’s about making sure you have a life balance. Being able to step back, reflect and put things into perspective is really important to helping you move forward.”

Thankfully, Stuart’s family, as well as Eaton, have been very supportive of his efforts, and have encouraged him to keep learning and growing throughout his journey.

The gift of giving back

To Stuart, volunteering is a humbling and enriching experience that everyone should embrace: “Charity work puts life into perspective and makes me really thankful for what you’ve got. I get just as much out of that as the charity I’m doing the work for and being able to give something back has made me a stronger person.”

We congratulate Stuart for his tremendous effort, and thank him for his service to the community.

“There’s a lot of people that do more than I do. We have a lot of people at Eaton that give back, and I feel extremely humbled to be nominated for this.”

We make what matters work. Sustainably.

As we realize our vision to improve the quality of life and the environment, we believe we should be measured by more than our financial results—we should also be defined by our commitment to the environment, to our workforce and local communities, and to doing business right. These elements are the bedrock of our approach to sustainability.
